Meet Stroke Specialist Speech and Language Therapist Kellyann Lea

About Kellyann Lea

Hi I’m Kellyann. I’ve been a Stroke Specialist Speech and Language Therapist since 2007 following my studies in Linguistics and later a Masters of Medical Science. I have had an engaging and fruitful career that I am more passionate about today than ever. I offer Specialist and Person-centered Assessment and Treatment that is bespoke, as no two people experiencing Stroke have the same difficulties nor the same needs.  Stroke does not just lead to a “Speech problem.”  Stroke affects your mind, psychology, thinking, problem solving, insight and your relationships in addition to your ability to communicate which includes reading, writing, understanding, speech and self expression.  To achieve the very best results your treatment at Speech Therapy with Kellyann is holistic; based on the very latest evidence based research from multiple streams of scientific research and is provided with a foundation of over fifteen years of clinical practice.  My goal is to help you to achieve YOUR very best possible results; Finding Ability in DisABILITY.  You will find in the “Additional Clinical Approaches” that I offer a multitude of therapies in addition to speech and language therapy, to offer you great expertise and clinical excellence.

I provide family training and self-directed therapy programmes in addition to one to one therapy.  The reason for this is strongly based in scientific research.  If we are to be effective, meaning, if the brain is to recover function, especially when a person is moderately communicatively disabled, we need to provide frequent and intensive neuro-rehabilitation. That means together we are actively rehabilitating as a family and friends approach. I very much enjoy equipping and training you to provide therapy and I walk with you every step of the way, sharing knowledge and skills to assist you in making informed and educated decisions about therapy for your loved ones.  I am always working to make your opting for private practice rehabilitation as affordable as possible for you over the long term. I also work alongside your NHS speech therapists to ensure we are contributing the very best to your rehabilitation journey.  Rehabilitation as I frequently say is “A marathon and not a sprint”, so equipping you for the long term is my goal from the very beginning.

In 2008 I trained under Professor Michael Thaut of Toronto University in Canada - the pioneer of the clinical system of Neurological Music Therapy -an evidence based system of neuro-rehabilitation.  Having a life long background in music myself,  I was one of the first speech therapists to train in this exciting field in the UK. 2023 sees the launching of my own self-directed neurological music therapy course called “Finding Your Voice with Kellyann”.  It is based on my many years of tried and tested best practice, working with thousands of patients with significant communication difficulties.  It is an opportunity to offer you UNLIMITED ACCESS to a combined approach of Neurological Music Therapy with Speech Therapy.  This course is highly popular and the feed back from patients and families alike is excellent.

Finding Ability in DisAbility
— Royal Hospital for Neurological Disability, London

My Philosophy

I found inspiration for my philosophy of practice from a visit to the Royal Hospital of Neuro-Disability, a charitable organisation based in London. Their motto put into words my reason for working to the very best of my ability in the field of acquired communication pathology, as I too believe in finding ABILITY in DisABILITY.
